New Medical Marijuana Registration Process in Virginia

New Medical Marijuana Registration Process

There are new rules for medical marijuana registration in Virginia and it is great news!

On April 11, 2022, Governor Youngkin signed HB 933, which removes the Board of Pharmacy patient registration requirement for medical cannabis but maintains the requirement that patients obtain written certification from a health care provider for medical cannabis.

Youngkin Remove Registration with State Requirement for Medical Marijuana

Before Governor Youngkin signed this new bill patients, would see our marijuana doctor, and once certified for medical marijuana; they would then need to register with the state and wait for their application to be processed. Due to the number of Virginians seeking medical cannabis treatment, the Board of Pharmacy has received a high number of applications. This has caused patients to wait 60 days or more to receive their Virginia marijuana card from the state.

Governor Youngkin sought to address the issue of patients being approved for medical cannabis use by their marijuana doctor but then having to wait months to actually begin treatment. Many residents of Virginia are pleased that House Bill 933 was passed because it means they will be able to receive medical marijuana faster than before.

No More Registration in Virginia!

This new legislation that was recently signed by the Governor of Virginia has completely eliminated the need for patients to register with the state after receiving their physician certification or recommendation for medical marijuana. This means that patients will not have to register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy before purchasing medical marijuana products at the state-licensed marijuana dispensary locations.

Can patients still register with the state to receive an official marijuana card? Yes, patients who would like to receive official documentation from the state still may do so, but it is not required to visit any state-regulated cannabis dispensaries.

What do I still need to purchase medical marijuana in Virginia? When Does the New Law Take Effect?

When does this new law take effect in the Commonwealth of Virginia? July 1, 2022. Until this law takes effect, all patients in Virginia must continue to register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy in order to receive a Virginia marijuana card and purchase medical marijuana products at their regional dispensary.

Since medical marijuana has become legal in Virginia, there have been over 45,000 patients who have received their medical cannabis cards. As of April, the Board of Pharmacy reported a backlog of over 8,000 medical marijuana card applications in Virginia. This severe backlog that has delayed patients from receiving the life-changing benefits of marijuana is what has prompted this new legislation to eliminate the state registration process for medical marijuana.
