Answers to the Questions Minnesota Patients Actually Ask
Minnesota does not issue a physical medical marijuana card. Patients meet with a participating practitioner, complete the state’s online registry process and use digital verification once enrolled. You can begin with a $40 online evaluation through CannabisMD TeleMed.
Getting a Minnesota Medical Marijuana Card Online
Can I get a Minnesota medical marijuana card online?
Yes. CannabisMD TeleMed offers online evaluations with a Minnesota-licensed medical marijuana doctor. If the doctor certifies your condition, Minnesota emails you an invitation to complete your Medical Cannabis Registry enrollment online. The state reviews the enrollment application separately.
How do I apply for a medical marijuana card in Minnesota?
Start with a medical evaluation from a participating Minnesota-licensed doctor. After certification, use the email link from the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) to apply to the Medical Cannabis Registry. Once the state approves your enrollment, your registry account serves as your proof of participation. See our step-by-step Minnesota medical card guide.
Who can certify me for medical marijuana in Minnesota?
Minnesota allows participating, Minnesota-licensed physicians, physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses to certify medical conditions. CannabisMD TeleMed offers remote appointments with a Minnesota-licensed doctor.
Do I need medical records to get a Minnesota medical card?
Bring any relevant records you already have, along with a list of medications and your medical history. Whether additional documentation is needed depends on the doctor’s review. Not having records in hand does not automatically determine the result of an evaluation.
Does Minnesota issue a physical medical marijuana card?
No. Minnesota uses an online Medical Cannabis Registry instead of issuing plastic medical marijuana cards. Enrolled patients can access and print a Registry Verification Document from their state account.
Minnesota Medical Card Cost and Benefits
How much does a Minnesota medical marijuana card cost?
A new or renewal online doctor evaluation with CannabisMD TeleMed is $40. Minnesota charges $0 for state enrollment. Medical cannabis purchases at licensed dispensaries are paid for separately. See the full Minnesota pricing breakdown.
Can I get a free medical marijuana card in Minnesota?
Minnesota does not charge a state registry enrollment fee, but a doctor evaluation may have a separate cost. CannabisMD TeleMed lists its Minnesota online evaluation at $40. The state does not issue a physical card.
What are the benefits of having a medical marijuana card in Minnesota?
Registered patients can make qualifying medical cannabis purchases without Minnesota cannabis tax or sales tax when buying from a retailer with the required medical endorsement. State law also provides certain employment and housing protections. Medical registration offers a separate patient-access pathway, including for eligible people younger than 21.
Do Minnesota medical marijuana patients pay cannabis tax?
Qualifying medical cannabis sold to or for a patient enrolled in Minnesota’s registry by a business with a medical cannabis retail endorsement is exempt from both the state cannabis tax and sales tax. The exemption does not automatically apply to accessories or every purchase made at a dispensary.
Do I need a medical card in Minnesota now that recreational marijuana is legal?
Adults 21 and older can buy cannabis from licensed adult-use retailers without medical enrollment. Minnesota’s medical program can still matter for qualifying tax-exempt medical purchases, applicable patient protections and medical access for eligible younger patients. Minnesota does not issue a physical medical card; patients enroll in its registry.
Minnesota Medical Marijuana Eligibility Questions
What conditions qualify for a medical marijuana card in Minnesota?
Minnesota lists 19 named medical conditions. The state also permits certification for another individual medical condition when an authorized practitioner determines it meets Minnesota’s broader eligibility definition. Review our Minnesota qualifying conditions guide for the complete list and details.
Can I get a Minnesota medical card for a condition not on the official list?
Possibly. Minnesota law provides an additional practitioner-based pathway beyond the 19 named conditions. A Minnesota-licensed doctor must review your individual condition and decide whether certification is appropriate.
Can I get a Minnesota medical marijuana card for anxiety?
Anxiety is not among the 19 conditions named in Minnesota law, but another medical condition may be considered under the broader practitioner-based pathway. A Minnesota-licensed doctor determines eligibility after an individual evaluation. Read how Minnesota qualifying conditions work.
Do I have to live in Minnesota to join the medical cannabis program?
Yes. Minnesota residency is required to enroll in the state Medical Cannabis Registry. The state may request documents supporting your identity and residential address during enrollment.
Can someone under 18 get a Minnesota medical marijuana card?
Minnesota’s medical program can include eligible minors, with a parent or legal guardian involved in enrollment and access. Specific documentation and caregiver arrangements depend on the patient’s circumstances. The doctor evaluates the medical condition, and the state handles enrollment.
State Enrollment, Approval and Patient Self-Evaluation
What happens after my Minnesota doctor certifies me?
Watch your email for a message from Minnesota OCM with the enrollment link. Complete the application, submit any requested documents and wait for the state’s decision. OCM says processing can take up to 30 days. Certification by a doctor is not the same as state enrollment approval.
How long does it take to get a Minnesota medical marijuana card?
The doctor evaluation and state enrollment are separate steps. After the doctor certifies your condition, Minnesota OCM may take up to 30 days to process a complete enrollment application. Because Minnesota uses a digital registry, there is no physical card shipment.
How long is my Minnesota medical cannabis certification valid?
The certification must lead to a completed and approved state enrollment within 90 days. Minnesota recommends applying during the first 60 days to allow time for processing. Once the state approves enrollment, registry participation generally lasts three years.
How do I log in to the Minnesota Medical Cannabis Registry?
Patients with an approved account can use the official Minnesota Registry Login page. New patients must first receive the enrollment email after certification and have their state application approved.
What is the Minnesota Patient Self-Evaluation (PSE)?
The PSE is a form in your state Medical Cannabis Registry account. It is required before your first medical cannabis purchase and quarterly during the first year after your first purchase. OCM notifies patients when a new form is due; dispensary staff review it.
Do I have to fill out a PSE before every Minnesota dispensary visit?
No. Under the current OCM schedule, patients complete a PSE before the first purchase and quarterly during the first year, measured from that purchase. After the first year, routine additional PSEs are not required. Complete any PSE your registry account shows as due before your next purchase.
Minnesota Medical Marijuana Card Renewal
How often do I need to renew my Minnesota medical marijuana card?
Minnesota Medical Cannabis Registry enrollment generally lasts three years. To remain in the program, patients must arrange recertification and complete state reenrollment before their enrollment expires.
Can I renew my Minnesota medical card online?
Yes. Minnesota permits telemedicine appointments for medical cannabis recertification. After a participating practitioner recertifies your condition, follow the state’s email link to finish reenrollment. Book a Minnesota online evaluation.
What happens if my Minnesota medical cannabis enrollment expires?
You will no longer be actively enrolled and cannot purchase through the medical program until your status is restored. OCM sends reminder emails before expiration. Its reenrollment instructions explain the steps if certification or enrollment deadlines are missed.
Can I switch medical marijuana doctors when renewing in Minnesota?
Yes. You can seek recertification from another participating Minnesota-licensed practitioner. Your chosen practitioner must independently evaluate your condition and submit the required certification.
Minnesota Medical Cannabis Caregivers and Veterans
Can someone else pick up my medical marijuana in Minnesota?
Yes, where the person is properly recorded as an eligible caregiver, spouse, parent or legal guardian under Minnesota’s Medical Cannabis Registry rules. They must follow the state’s identification and enrollment requirements.
Do Minnesota medical cannabis caregivers need a background check?
No. According to Minnesota OCM, the program stopped requiring caregiver background checks on July 1, 2024. Designated caregivers still need to be at least 18 and register through the state process. Spouses, parents and legal guardians follow a different, simplified process.
Can Minnesota veterans self-certify for medical cannabis?
Eligible veterans may use Minnesota’s separate veteran certification form instead of a practitioner certification. That route is limited to the 19 conditions specifically named in state law and requires the documentation described by OCM.
Minnesota Medical Marijuana Rights and Dispensary Rules
Does a Minnesota medical card protect me at work?
Minnesota law provides certain employment protections for enrolled medical cannabis patients, including protections concerning registry status and some positive cannabis tests. Important exceptions apply to workplace use or impairment, safety-sensitive duties and applicable federal requirements. These protections are not permission to use cannabis at work.
Can I buy cannabis in Minnesota without a medical card?
Yes. Adults 21 and older may purchase from licensed adult-use cannabis retailers. To make purchases through the state medical cannabis program and access medical-program benefits, patients must be enrolled in the Medical Cannabis Registry.
Can I use an out-of-state medical marijuana card at a Minnesota dispensary?
An out-of-state card does not automatically enroll you in Minnesota’s Medical Cannabis Registry or provide its patient tax exemption. Visitors age 21 and older may have adult-use purchasing options where licensed sales are available. Check current OCM rules before relying on another state’s card.
Can I take medical marijuana across Minnesota state lines?
Do not assume Minnesota registration permits carrying cannabis across state lines. Interstate transport raises separate federal and destination-state legal issues. Keep purchases and use within the laws that apply at your location.
Where can I buy medical cannabis after Minnesota approves my enrollment?
Once your state enrollment is active and your required PSE is complete, you can arrange a visit with an authorized Minnesota medical cannabis dispensary. Bring the identification and registry verification the dispensary requires. Minnesota OCM lists dispensary resources.
