Starting July 1, 2022, Virginia Marijuana Card Not Needed at Dispensary

Starting on July 1, 2022, patients will no longer be required to have a Virginia medical marijuana card to access state-licensed medical marijuana dispensary locations. You will only need your medical cannabis certificate from a licensed doctor.

Governor Youngkin recently passed a new bill that will remove the requirement for patients to receive a Virginia marijuana card from the state prior to going to medical cannabis dispensary locations in Virginia. Patients will still need to receive a physician recommendation or medical marijuana certificate to enter dispensary locations. Our marijuana doctor provides physician recommendations and medical cannabis certificates so patients can access any state-regulated medical marijuana dispensary locations in Virginia.

New Rules for Medical Marijuana Access in Virginia

This new law will remove the requirement of patients needing to register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy in order to enter and purchase medical marijuana products at local cannabis dispensaries throughout Virginia. Senate Bill 671 (SB 671) is welcome news to patients in Virginia seeking to alleviate the symptoms of their conditions with medical marijuana. The current process for accessing medical cannabis dispensary locations in Virginia requires that patients submit an application for a medical marijuana card to the state prior to visiting any local dispensary locations. Patients would then have to wait for the state to process their applications which could take 60 days or longer. This new bill that Governor Youngkin signed removes the requirement to submit an application to the state but still requires patients obtain their physician recommendation also known as a medical cannabis certificate to access any medical cannabis dispensary within Virginia.

You Still Need a Physician Recommendation for Medical Marijuana in Virginia

Absolutely, the new bill does not remove the requirement for patients to have a consultation with a certified marijuana doctor prior to receiving access to any medical marijuana dispensary location in Virginia. The purpose of this bill was to speed up the process of obtaining medical marijuana so patients can begin receiving treatment as soon as they are certified for medical marijuana by a state licensed doctor. This new medical marijuana legislation will allow patients to see a physician, receive their physician recommendation, and visit the medical marijuana dispensary all on the same day!
