Illinois Medical Card Renewal FAQ

How do I renew my Illinois medical marijuana card?

For a full recertification, book a $40 online visit with an Illinois-licensed doctor. Then sign in through ILogin, select Renew and pay the separate state fee.

How much does it cost to renew a medical card in Illinois?

$40 for a new doctor certification visit, and you pay only if approved. IDPH charges a separate state renewal fee based on the card term you choose.

How long is a doctor's certification valid in Illinois?

Up to 3 years. Your card itself lasts 1, 2 or 3 years, depending on the term you choose when you pay the state fee.

Do I need a new doctor certification every time I renew?

Not always. Some Illinois patients can extend a 1- or 2-year state registration while their existing doctor certification is still valid. When a new certification is needed, our Illinois doctors can handle it online for $40.

How early can I renew my Illinois medical card?

Your account enters Pending Renewal within 90 days of expiration. Start then and aim to submit your renewal at least 45 days before your card expires.

Can I still renew if my Illinois card already expired?

You can get back into the program, but an expired card generally requires a new application and updated doctor certification. You lose your active patient benefits until IDPH approves your new registration.

Can I renew with a different doctor than last time?

Yes. Any Illinois-licensed practitioner who certifies medical cannabis patients can renew your certification, so you don't need to go back to your last doctor.

Will I lose access to medical dispensaries while my renewal is processing?

Your current card stays valid until its expiration date. Renewing early gives IDPH time to finish before that date, so you can keep using your medical benefits without a gap.
