Your Illinois Medical Card Questions
How much is an Illinois medical marijuana card?
Your evaluation with CannabisMD TeleMed is $40 online for new and returning patients, and you pay only if approved.
When am I charged?
We place a temporary hold when you book, so you may see a pending charge. You're only charged if the doctor approves you. Cancel or miss your appointment? The temporary hold expires in 5 days and you are not charged.
Is an Illinois medical card worth it?
Yes, for most patients. The tax savings alone cover the evaluation fast, and you also get higher purchase limits, shopping from age 18, and home grow at 21+.
Can you get a medical card at 18 in Illinois?
Yes. Medical patients can buy from age 18, while recreational buyers must be 21. Patients under 18 can qualify too, with two certifications and a caregiver.
Can you get a medical card for anxiety in Illinois?
Anxiety alone isn't one of Illinois' 58 qualifying conditions, but PTSD and chronic pain are. If you have any listed condition, you can qualify, and your doctor will review it during your evaluation.
Is telemedicine allowed for Illinois medical cannabis certification?
Yes. Booking, your doctor visit, and your state application all happen online.
When can I buy from an Illinois dispensary?
The same day you apply. Right after you submit your state application and pay the state fee online, you can generate a 90-day provisional registration letter that lets you shop at medical dispensaries while your card is on the way.
How do I apply for a medical card in Illinois?
Start with a certification from an Illinois-licensed doctor, which takes 10 minutes or less. Then apply online with IDPH through ILogin: upload your photo, ID and proof of residency, and pay the state fee. Your doctor's certification links to your application automatically.
What does 1% tax save me in Illinois?
Up to $30.25 in state tax on every $100, because medical patients pay 1% instead of up to 31.25% on recreational cannabis. At that top rate, spending $150 a month saves about $545 a year, before local taxes.
Does an Illinois card let me grow at home?
Yes, if you're 21 or older. Registered patients can grow up to 5 plants at home.
Can I use my Illinois medical card in another state?
Several places honor your Illinois card, including Michigan and Nevada, where you can shop like a local. It doesn't work the other way: Illinois does not accept medical cards from other states.
Illinois Program Rules, From Minors to Reciprocity
The details most patients look up sooner or later.
Under 18 in Illinois: Two Certifications, One Caregiver
Illinois certifies patients under 18 with two health care professional certifications and a caregiver who is a parent or legal guardian. That adult applies for them.
- Two certifications. A certifying health care professional plus a second, reviewing health care professional. A minor with a terminal illness needs only the first.
- Caregiver required. Name up to 3 caregivers. At least one must be the biological parent or legal guardian.
- The adult applies. The caregiver creates the account and uploads the minor's birth certificate as proof of age. No photo is needed for the minor.
- Infused products only. Caregivers of minors may buy medical cannabis-infused products. Other product types are not allowed.
- School access. Ashley's Law lets a designated caregiver give a student their infused product at school.
- Turning 18. Switch to an adult card right away or at your normal renewal.
Illinois Caregivers: Up to 3 Per Patient
A designated caregiver can buy medical cannabis for you and help you use it.
- Who qualifies. An Illinois resident, 21 or older, who agrees to assist you and has no conviction for an excluded offense.
- How many. Every patient can name up to 3 caregivers. Each caregiver assists one registered patient.
- How to register. Add your caregiver in your state application. They get an email link to upload a photo, ID and proof of address and sign the consent. Caregivers get their own account and provisional letter.
Illinois Application Documents: Residency, Photo, ID
The Illinois application needs proof of residency, a recent photo, a government photo ID and your doctor's certification.
- Proof of Illinois residency. A valid Illinois driver's license or state ID showing your current address covers it. If your address differs, upload one document such as a utility bill, lease, or bank statement from the last 90 days.
- A recent photo. Taken within 30 days, 2x2, full face, plain background.
- Government photo ID. License, state ID or passport.
- Your doctor's certification. It links to your application by name, date of birth and Social Security number.
- No permanent address? A notarized homeless certification is accepted.
Where You Can Use and Buy Medical Cannabis in Illinois
Buy up to 2.5 ounces every 14 days at medical dispensaries and use it at home.
- Not allowed: use in any motor vehicle or public place, on a school bus or school grounds (except under Ashley's Law), in correctional facilities, or in licensed child care homes. No smoking where smoking is banned.
- In the car: keep it in a sealed container, out of reach while the vehicle moves.
- Driving: never drive impaired. A cannabis DUI or refusing a test revokes your card.
- Certain jobs: active-duty police, correctional and probation officers, firefighters, and school bus permit or CDL holders cannot use under the program.
Using Your Illinois Card in Other States
Some places let you shop like a local with your Illinois card. Others limit what you can do.
- Shop like a local: Maine, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.
- Visitor application required: Arkansas, Hawaii, Oklahoma and Utah.
- Possession only: Georgia, Iowa, Missouri and New Hampshire.
- Moving to Illinois? Illinois does not accept out-of-state cards. Get certified with us and apply with IDPH online.
