Inside New York's Program: Caregivers, IDs, Renewals

Helpful details about caregivers, dispensary IDs, and renewals, all in one place.

New York Minors: Parent Consent, Caregiver Required

New York certifies patients under 18. A parent or legal guardian gives consent, and a caregiver makes the purchases.

  • Parent or guardian consent. The practitioner gets a statement from the person with legal authority to make the minor's health care decisions, consenting to medical cannabis and naming the caregiver.
  • Caregiver required. The caregiver must be 18 or older. They are listed on the certification and registered automatically, with no separate application.
  • Buying. The caregiver shops at the dispensary with their caregiver registry ID, the patient's certification and their own government photo ID.
  • Switching caregivers. To change that caregiver, tell the practitioner. Additional caregivers register with the Office of Cannabis Management.
  • Caregiver fee. $0 in state fees.

New York Caregivers: Up to 5 Per Patient

A designated caregiver can buy, carry and give medical cannabis to you, and New York allows up to 5 per patient.

  • Adding caregivers. Add them any time after you are certified.
  • Caregiver limit. One person can be a caregiver for up to 4 certified patients.
  • How to register. Your caregiver applies to the Office of Cannabis Management with their name, address, date of birth, phone, email and signature, and agrees to handle products securely. They can buy once their caregiver registry ID is issued.
  • Missing paperwork. If an application is incomplete, the caregiver has 30 days to send what is missing.
  • Name or address changes. Caregivers report name or address changes within 10 business days.
  • Facility caregivers. Hospitals, schools, adult care and residential treatment facilities can register as caregivers, on top of your 5.

What You Show at a New York Dispensary

There's nothing to upload ahead of time. Here's what goes on your certification and what to bring.

  • For your visit: your name, date of birth, home address, phone and email go on your certification.
  • At the dispensary: your signed certification, on paper or on your phone, plus a valid government-issued photo ID.
  • Accepted IDs: a New York DMV ID, a U.S. federal ID, an ID from any U.S. state, territory or D.C., a regulated college ID, or a Canadian provincial ID.

New York Renewal: 2 Years, $40 Online

Your certification is valid for 2 years from the day it is signed, unless your doctor sets an earlier date.

  1. Check your expiration date. It is printed on your certification. If we certified you, we'll send you a reminder 60 days out.
  2. Book your renewal. We renew patients wherever they were certified before.
  3. Meet your doctor online. From home, any day of the week.
  4. Get your new certification. It shows your registry ID and works right away with your photo ID.

Patients certified as terminally ill keep a certification that does not expire.
