In New York, Any Condition Can Qualify for Medical Cannabis

The state's Office of Cannabis Management says patients can be certified "for any condition deemed suitable by the provider." Since the 2021 Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act, New York has no required list of qualifying conditions.

Under Cannabis Law Section 30, your practitioner specifies your condition, confirms they are qualified to treat it, and certifies when you are likely to receive therapeutic or palliative benefit from medical cannabis. That is the whole test.

No list to match Your condition does not need to be named.
Any condition Your doctor certifies any condition they find cannabis can help.

The simple version: tell your doctor what you are dealing with. There is no state list to check first, and you only pay if you're approved.

14 Conditions New York Patients Commonly Use Medical Cannabis For

New York does not publish a list of required conditions. The Office of Cannabis Management shares 14 common examples, and says the examples include but are not limited to these.

Autism
Alzheimer's disease
Chronic pain
HIV/AIDS
Inflammatory bowel disease
Certain mental health conditions (PTSD, anxiety, and others)
Multiple sclerosis
Muscular dystrophy
Neuropathy
Parkinson's disease
Rheumatoid arthritis
Substance use disorder
This is not a limit: New York names no required conditions, so a condition missing from these 14 examples can still be certified by your doctor.

Your Condition Does Not Need to Be Named Anywhere

Before the 2021 law, New York certified patients for specific named conditions plus associated symptoms. Those requirements are gone, and your medical cannabis doctor now certifies based on clinical judgment.

That means a diagnosis the state never mentioned is treated the same as a common one: your doctor reviews your history and decides whether medical cannabis can help. You do not need to match your condition to a legal category before booking.

Easy to start: book an online visit, share what you are dealing with, and let your doctor take it from there.

What You Need for NY Medical Cannabis Certification

New York certification takes three things, and none of them involves a state application. Patients 18+ can be certified on their own (under 18 with a parent's consent and a caregiver), while adult-use purchases require age 21.

Bring This to Your New York Appointment

New York practitioners complete a full assessment of your medical history and current condition before certifying. Have your New York address and a few details about what you are dealing with ready.

Anything you already have about your condition can help, such as a diagnosis or past treatments. Section 30 has the practitioner review past treatments, so a quick list of what you have tried is useful.

No paperwork file needed: you do not have to collect anything perfect before you book. Your doctor will tell you what matters during the visit.

New York certifications contain a registry ID and can be used immediately, so patients can move from the visit to the dispensary the same day.

1 Save your certification Keep a paper copy or the version on your phone or other smart device.
2 Shop at a medical dispensary Show your certification and a government-issued photo ID at any registered New York medical dispensary.
3 Add caregivers anytime You can designate up to five caregivers after you are auto-registered.
